devín castle

so we went to devín castle the other day. our first trip outside of our little bubble here in Slovakia. it was the strangest thing to actually see things that you only really read about or see on discovery channel. to say this castle was old is an understatement. the things that I’ve seen in salt lake that are old are like mid-1800s at the oldest?…  this was orders of magnitude older than that. it was so old…  (insert yo mama joke here)

although most of it has been rebuilt in the 20th century (it was destroyed by Napoleon… yes, that Napoleon), it was still strange to be in a place where people have lived for thousands of years. there were outlines of houses from the roman era, a church from who knows how long ago, and it was crazy to sit there and think about the people who built it, and defended it from invaders since way before anything I can think of. but they say a picture is worth a thousand words… well, here’s a couple thousand words for ya…

that last one obviously isn’t the castle, but rather a shot down the street of Devín, the village where the castle is located.

and I have one more image for you, but this one is different, for this one, sit back from your monitor a few feet, cross your eyes to form a third image in the middle, and this third image should be in 3D to give you a bit of perspective on the tower in ralation to the cliff, and the rest of the castle. and if you haven’t already, I recommend clicking the link above to check out the wikipedia article on this castle, get some more history on it, as well as a Google Maps location.

  1. actually, if you’ll note in the sidebar on the right there (also at the bottom of the page)… the whole family posts. if I posted the story, the title is blue. if chelsea posted the story, the title is yellow, and if skye posted the story, the title is purple. the same goes for our comments. you can also click our names in the sidebar to get a listing of just that person’s posts.

i say this because chelsea posted the bank story.
