Salzburg. Wow, what a breath of fresh air after 2 days of stuffy train rides. The train ride through the Alps helped set the scene and mood of what was to come. So I suppose spending an unexpected night in Milano was a blessing in disguise, because the Alps train ride was definitely a highlight and had we taken the night train, we would have missed the Alps during the day. The steep mountains just surge out of the ground and go straight up. There are no foothills like Utah, it’s just gorgeous, bright green hilly valleys and then rocky mountain. It was so stunning, I couldn’t keep my eyes off of them. At times, I felt like I was in a train model with all of the bridges and charming villages, all centered around an old church steeple. We had a stop in Innsbruck, and it was a scene from the Sound of Music; was green as Hawaii, more exaggerated mountains than Utah, and the small European city. It help our sour mood too to see something worth seeing. This is one of those places where pictures would never do justice.
Tirrenia is a small, busy, beautiful beach town near Pisa. There was no direct train to the town, so we took a train to Livorno, just a bit south of the beach. This train appeared to drop us off in the middle of podunk nowhere! I was seriously half expecting to see sage brush blow by in the wind. We had to then find a way from the train to the hotel. This part of every city we visited usually turned out to be the most adventurous, since there just wasn’t enough time pre-trip to plan every detail of transportation.
here are a couple of videos that show how much the little berry is growing up.
so we were in Prague, waiting at a park for the train (see Prague post) and a bipedal creature we had heard stories of suddenly appeared, and then just as soon… disappeared.
we saw it near us a couple of times, and we were in shock and weren’t thinking straight, but as it passed by for the third or fourth time, we grabbed the camera and quickly began shooting video. we don’t know what it was, haven’t seen it before, and haven’t seen it since, but it was the strangest, most amazing little creature I think I’ve ever seen.
shocking video after the break. Continue reading “it walks !”
Last weekend we went to Budapest, Hungary. It’s a 2.5 hour train ride so we decided to stay overnight. We left early Saturday morning (nothing says Trip like the alarm NOT going off at 4am when you have to leave by 5) on the 6am train. I was a little anxious about Skye and the train ride, but she did great on the way down. On the way home, though, she was a lot more restless and we had our stuff piled all over our cabin trying to keep her happy and entertained. Seriously, we had a cabin to ourselves, until the last 30 seconds a single guy comes in with a reservation (since it was a holiday weekend). Poor bloke.
Here are some videos of the Skyeberry on her birthday…
caution… some of these are longer than usual (for the grandparents).
here are some random videos of Skye. they’re not terribly exciting, just Skye being Skye and all her cute self.

Some days are great, when all it takes is figuring out a new bus route to feel elated about living here. Some days are really hard, when all it takes is very soggy shoes to condemn all that is Slovak. Then there are other circumstances beyond my control that whittle their way in to it all. I also very much underestimated the spirit of having Sammie around. When the reality hit that we can’t bring her over, I’ve been really sad ever since. I feel like a terrible owner and the house just isn’t the same without her silent presence in the corner. Also difficult, is the loss of Fede. Every night before I go to bed, I watch Skye sleep and for some reason this brings it all back and I immediately picture our dark living room in SLC once again. I don’t know if I can ever live there again.
Overall though, it is getting better, the more acquainted we become with the city. The cold, snowy weather dampens the explorer inclinations. Without Skye we could probably do a little more, but we’ll get around to it eventually. The weekdays are spent trying to settle in to a routine with work chaos for us both and being home-bound with the weather. I always loved the snow and the freshness it brought with it, but that was before I had to walk in it everyday. I can tell Skye is also eager to be out and about, so it won’t be long now before we are able to venture to the Old City (Stare Mesto) for just a few hours to get away. I really want to see the inside of some of these ancient, impressive cathedrals and castles. I mean, there aren’t any of these anywhere in the states. None. But here they populate the landscape everywhere. I love it! They have these deep, heavy roots that loom all around and it is impossible to ignore their existence. Even when they will start to become part of the background scenery, which they will, they will always serve as a reminder of the past with just a passing eye.
On another note, here is one of our many, many, many, many, many, many moments waiting for the bus. Sorry for the poor quality, it was taken with my phone.
